One of the things that really annoys anyone who has not fallen under Apple’s magic spell is that they lock down the market with proprietary hardware and software. For anyone who is concerned about open systems, freedom and democracy this is not a good thing. This opinion has some very influential people behind it.

Possibly the most important person to criticize Apple for their over reliance on proprietary software was Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with inventing the World Wide Web. He wrote in a famous article in Scientific American, Long Live the Web: A Call for Continued Open Standards and Neutrality, that open standards foster creativity while closed standards ‘creates closed worlds’ He gives the example of using iTunes which doesn’t use http, but instead itunes: and this he believes takes you off the web and closes down innovation.

Anyone who is a keen player of games will probably be fed up with the small number of games that actually work on Macs. People who play partypoker PL will be slightly miffed that they have to use their Java-based ‘instant play’ system. Most PC Gamers will be really annoyed that you can play so few games on Macs - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is one particularly notable example.

The computer freedom guru Richard Stallman has said that he is glad that Steve Jobs (who The Economist magazine called The Minister of Magic) is gone. Now, before you get too outraged, he said he glad he and his influence is gone, not that he is glad that he died young-ish of cancer. Stallman believes that Jobs turned computers into prison and then made that prison seem ‘cool’ to the in-mates. All us Mac-o-Phobes, will probably agree with his opinion that we can only hope that Jobs’s successors will be less effective than the man himself.

Cracking iWork09 is So easy!!! http://macphobia.com/cracking-iwork09-is-so-easy.macphobia http://macphobia.com/cracking-iwork09-is-so-easy.macphobia#comments Thu, 02 Apr 2009 18:54:07 +0000 Mac http://macphobia.com/?p=478 Macs Look good . I am OK with it. Mac OS also looks sleek . But yes this shiny thing comes with a high price . But under the hood Macs are not so secure and they are broke into easily . Considering the fact that Macs share just less than 9% of the total Computer market these are so easy to break Into . Not only the OS but Apple softwares are also easily cracked. I am not a cracker or a hacker but i figured out how to register the trial version of my iWork 2009 Application. Its really simple . I didn’t believe Apple creates products which are so easy to break .

I modified a file named “com.apple.iWork09.Installer.plist” found under Library>Preferences. The content of the file should be changed to “bplist00Ñ[InstallModeVRetail” and Bingo i had the full registered version of iWork09.

Macs are EASIEST to break http://macphobia.com/macs-are-easiest-to-break.macphobia http://macphobia.com/macs-are-easiest-to-break.macphobia#comments Thu, 26 Mar 2009 13:40:09 +0000 Windows http://macphobia.com/?p=474 Below excerpt is from the interview of the Man who broke  into MacBook within 2 minutes in Pwn2Own contest.

Alan: How much of your work today is focused on securing Macs vs. PC vs. Linux? Who is your typical customer?

Charlie: At work, I mostly look at application-level security. Most of this is really independent of operating system. For example, source code reviews or reverse engineering binaries doesn’t depend much on the operating system. I’ve spent a lot of my research time on Macs because I like them and they also happen to be pretty easy to break!

Most of ISE’s customers are small to medium size companies that care a lot about security and want to make sure their applications are secure.  The companies that only want a check box usually go somewhere else because we are pretty good at what we do and consequently charge more than many other consulting firms.

iPhone Fail in Japan http://macphobia.com/iphone-fail-in-japan.macphobia http://macphobia.com/iphone-fail-in-japan.macphobia#comments Fri, 27 Feb 2009 12:21:48 +0000 Windows http://macphobia.com/?p=463

Apple’s iPhone has wowed most of the globe — but not Japan, where the handset is selling so poorly it’s being offered for free.
What’s wrong with the iPhone, from a Japanese perspective? Almost everything: the high monthly data plans that go with it, its paucity of features, the low-quality camera, the unfashionable design and the fact that it’s not Japanese.
In an effort to boost business, Japanese carrier SoftBank this week launched the “iPhone for Everybody” campaign, which gives away the 8-GB model of the iPhone 3G if customers agree to a two-year contract.
“The pricing has been completely out of whack with market reality,” said Global Crown Research analyst Tero Kuittinen in regard to Apple’s iPhone prices internationally. “I think they [Apple and its partners overseas] are in the process of adjusting to local conditions.”

Command Tab Screen

Command Tab Screen

I am used to using Alt Tab in Windows to quickly switch between multiple window screens i have opened ( Multitasking :-) ). The similar key combination and feature is also present in Mac. The key combination in Mac is Command + Tab which is similar to Windows’ Alt + Tab. But i find Mac’s Command+Tab feature not of great use.

Alt Tab Screen - Windows

Alt Tab Screen - Windows

The problem is unlike in windows when pressed appropriate key to bring switcher screen Mac doesn’t show multiple Finder icons with appropriate title even if there are more than one Finder windows . Mac just shows just one icon for Finder that too without any title of the Finder window its going to open when selected. With other applications as well switcher screen in Mac doesn’t show any title. It just tells you the application name in title . Not very user friendly :-( . Macs are known for being more user friendly and good UI ?..

Talking about UI . Vista has another key shortcut ( Windows key + Tab ) which brings up the switcher window in a fantastic flip 3D screen UI also known as Aero style . I really enjoy this switcher screen in Vista.

And yes the concept of app switcher was first adopted by Windows .

Apple Japan website WTF http://macphobia.com/apple-japan-website-wtf.macphobia http://macphobia.com/apple-japan-website-wtf.macphobia#comments Wed, 21 Jan 2009 17:04:43 +0000 Windows http://macphobia.com/?p=446 While most of the websites are shortening their web URL dropping www and redirecting www to non-www URL . This trend is mainly adopted by relatively new websites ( web2.0 websites ) . Apple seems to be in the old age . In addition Apple doesn’t have any handeling if anyone typed URL without www ( at least for japan website ) . and thus misleading customers or even may be losing them. I first thought when i typed http://apple.com/jp that Apple Japan website must be down. But i tried putting the URL again with www i.e., http://www.apple.com/jp it worked fine. Really bad for Japanese Apple customers . and WTF this is a very simple thing which any website administrator should know .

UPDATE 1: seems its fixed now.. Or is it that it was the bad timing when i tried accessing http://apple.com/jp

UPDATE 2: i am still getting error when i open http://apple.com/jp with Chrome in Vista

Apple Safari RSS Vulnerability http://macphobia.com/apple-safari-rss-vulnerability.macphobia http://macphobia.com/apple-safari-rss-vulnerability.macphobia#comments Thu, 15 Jan 2009 17:30:42 +0000 Windows http://macphobia.com/?p=442 Computer scientist Brian Mastenbrook has discovered a fairly serious bug in Safari’s RSS feed handling that can allow a maliciously-crafted web page to access personal information without any knowledge or intervention of the user. The information can include—but isn’t necessarily limited to—e-mails, passwords, and information stored in browser cookies.

This vulnerability affects any Mac OS X user that has Safari set as the default feed reader in Safari’s RSS preferences. You can be affected by it even if you don’t read RSS feeds or regularly use another browser such as Firefox. As for Windows users, the vulnerability only affects those who use Safari to browse the web.

Solution/Workaround for this problem is very simple.
