Sales of Apple desktop computers fell 38 percent in November, according to retail research firm NPD.The figure compares to a 15 percent drop in U.S. sales of Windows desktop PCs and a 20 percent domestic cut for overall desktop sales during the past month.

Mac U.S. sales were flat in November, falling 1 percent as PC sales grew 2 percent, according to NPD. The numbers appear to reflect a consumer spending tightening and Apple’s reluctance to shift from premium prices.

While PC makers, such as HP and Dell, cut holiday prices by up to 50 percent, Apple introduced 5 percent to 10 percent discounts since December of 2007, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told the Wall Street Journal Tuesday.

Such selective editing ;-) You seem to have missed this bit…

“Apple U.S. notebook sales in November outpaced Windows portables, 22 percent versus 15 percent, according to the analyst firm.”

  2. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

@Duncan.. you are a careful reader.. yes i edited that.. because its MacPhobia’s view ;-) . but then i gave the sources for further reading ( research ) ;-)

  3. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Wow, admit to having to resort to editing as bad as lies to show that Windows is better. Now I trust you! I’m gonna go buy a new Windows computer!

  4. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

I only wanted to focus the loss in the iMac sell . I am not lying here .

  5. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

Well duh the iMac sales are down. They just released these brand new Laptops that everyone wants to get. The iMacs are now the old things. I think it’s ironic that XP, the older operating system, makes more sales than Vista. Whereas on a Mac, the new products are better. Isn’t that a strange concept?

  6. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

But I hope Windows 7 will be the best Microsoft OS ever.. yesterday i downloaded Windows 7 beta and did little hands on with it and belive me its awesome . Leopard fans.. you should try Windows 7.. :-)

  7. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

I’m sure you hoped the same thing about Vista. Shame, really.

  8. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

Nope i didn’t care much about Vista then.. and i dont really find Vista bad as opposed to all these people find it to be.. Vista is stll good for my daily computing needs

  9. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

So you didn’t care about Vista, but you care about Windows 7? Why?

  10. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

i didn’t use to care about any OS then may be because i was in college busy with my academics.

  11. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

If you care about an OS now, then why haven’t you given Mac a fair chance yet? Listen, I’m sure you can find a handful of reasons why not to buy a Mac, but from what I hear, everyone who has switched from Windows to Mac has been happy about it, and unless you try both seriously, then I don’t think you are passing fair judgement when you bash people for pointing out flaws in your logic.

  12. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

I use Mac and PC at home an PC at work. And i believe that Mac is good for people who just want to listen to music , play movies , surf internet and check mails and not for a software developer like me. putting nearly $2000 in Mac for all these basic work is not reasonable. with all these netbooks available now all this basic computing work can be done in $400 machine

  13. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

I’m not going to talk about Mac vs Pc in general. Let’s just talk about Windows vs OS X. Pros for Windows go to more application compatibility. Pros for OS X go to everything else. Since you’re going to ask me why I like my computer at some point, the reasons are as follows:

    1) Viruses: I have a few friends with Windows on their computer. Every time I have suggested a program that they try out, they have asked me if it has viruses on it. I don’t mean some of the time, my friend (not very computer literate mind you) asked me if downloading AIM was safe. That isn’t a life I want. That is just as much of a restriction to me as lack of application support.

    2) Speed and Ease of Use: I know that you hear this a bunch, but it’s not just something general that people say. I tried using my friend’s computer (Vista) which was faster than mine. I was trying to help him with an Email issue he had been having, and it was a pain for me to use. To you, it seems standard because you haven’t tried anything else, but if you’ve used OS X, you’ll realize that there is a drastic improvement in speed, and also simplicity. As stupid as that sounds, every process on OS X has been refined so fine that my 40 year old mom could teach my 80 year old grandmother photo editing on iPhoto. That’s just an example, it applies everywhere you go on OS X.

There are a bunch of other reasons as to why I like Leopard better, (good support, compatibility, ease to set up, etc.) but those are the main two.

One last thing that I’d like to point out is that the software issues aren’t as bad for OS X as you may think. Obviously it comes with Bootcamp, which means that there is no reason not to buy a Pc, because you get both on a Mac. Or, if you don’t like Windows but you want the apps (which is what I’m doing), there is a program called Crossover X. It costs $40, and lets you run about 80% of the Windows games fully functionally without ever booting onto Windows. There are versions optimized for gaming, and for software. And a lot of Windows software is Mac compatible, too. If you wanted to transfer over everything from Windows to Leopard, everything but the applications would be available, and if you have Bootcamp, Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or Crossover X, then that isn’t a problem either.

I understand that people like to stick with the choices that they make, but there is almost no downside to switching over to Mac, and I would strongly urge you to just try it out for your next computer. Even if you don’t like it, you can just get a refund from Apple, which is great with it’s customer support.

Anyway, I hope you read all that. It is a lot of information, but those are my main reasons for preferring Mac over PC. If you have any questions about why not to at least give it a try, I’d love to answer them.

When a Mac user is someone who suggests that you try their system, it isn’t that they have caught the “smug mac user” virus, they just really like their machine. Plus, most of them started on Windows. I never went there, so if you’d like to find out more about reasons for switching, just Youtube, “Why I switched to Mac”. There are hundreds of videos there which can answer all your questions about it.

  14. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

Wow, I just finished typing that and realized just how long that is. Please try and read it from top to bottom, because it has a ton of valuable information on it.

  15. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

Thanks for the information..i appreciate that. though all these were known to me and FYI i am already using Mac and also Windows. Macs are simple .. but i think they are TOO SIMPLE to be a computer ;-)

  16. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

Oh! I wasn’t aware that you were a Mac user. That’s strange to me. I just don’t see the problem in simplicity. It can do all the same things, they’re just easier.

  17. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

You’re not looking hard enough. I dare you to name something you can do on a pc that you can’t on a Mac.

  18. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

@MadeOnAMac how can you expect someone to write about Mac-phobia if they dont use Macs :-)

  19. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

@Etrocal .. just for an example out of many things.. how do u “Cut” and “Paste” a folder in Finder ?

  20. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Cut and paste? Explain what you mean.

  21. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

oh… c’mon.. have you ever cut and pasted some text in Textedit?. the same kind of Cut and paste . you seem to be a very simple user thats why you like Simple OS. ;-)

  22. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Sorry, I’m used to different terms. Copy paste?

  23. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

You’d be surprised at the shear amount of Mac bashing by people who have never used them, and most of your articles were basically that. Just negative feedback on small problems that Mac has ever had. And with all your Apple bashing, it didn’t seem that you were very informed on most of what you were preaching against. If you feel so strongly toward Windows, I’d just think you’d have more examples of the benefits towards Windows, not just the shortcomings of Apple. And if you do like Macs as well, why do you have a website like this?

I’d urge you to use your Mac as much as possible. I’ve heard of cases where after a month, people have no longer found need to use Windows, even if they have the machine sitting next to them.

And if it grows on you, this site could easily be converted to a place that is positive towards Macs.

  24. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

I think I can help with Etrocal. Cut/Paste is exactly the same on Windows as it is on Mac, the only difference is that instead of holding down the Control key, you hold down the Command key. And if you don’t like that, there’s a way to change it in System Preferences.

  25. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

@Erocal .. not Copy paste .. Cut Paste is something different.

@Made… I use Mac at home as i already said.

  26. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Yes, explain what you mean by cut and paste.

  27. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

I know you do, I just thought you didn’t know how to do it, otherwise you wouldn’t be asking Etrocal.

  28. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

Etrocal, Copy/Paste is when you duplicate a file. Cut/Paste deletes the original. It is done with Command X rather than Command C.

  29. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

    Hm.

  30. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Back to my previous statement. Name one thing that you can do on a pc that you can’t on a Mac. Or even do better, really.

  31. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

@Etrocal .. you cant “Cut” and “Paste” a folder in Finder of Mac .. to answer your question.. though there are many other things too..

  32. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

Etrocal, I wouldn’t go into that cans and can’t do’s of each system, because they each have hundreds of little features that the other doesn’t. And plus, if you are really looking into buying a computer, at least for me, that’s not what I care about. However, the part that did confuse me about what you were saying MacPhobia, was that Leopard being a simple system was bad. I don’t understand how simple is worse.

  33. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Name something more than a keyboard shortcut that for Macs are numerous and customizable. Name something useful. All of the pc argument is that Mac is nice interface, and pc’s can do work. Name some ‘work’ that pc can do better.

  34. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

Does he really need to? *Cough “.exe” Cough Cough*

I’m not going to judge a system based on that, but you really can’t play the point fingers at the cans and can’t do’s of the systems because they each have their own features.

  35. MacPhobia HONG KONG Says:

@MadeOnAMac Simple is worse for some people like me who want to explore things and go down deeper.. believe me to fully explore a Mac it took me just about 3-4 hrs or so.. see its Control Panel ( System Preferences ) there is nothing much . my initial thought when i first used mac and kept on exploring and opend Syetem Preferences was damn it has lesser thing in its setting than my PDA has..

  36. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Yeah, but now that Mac can run pc through Crossover or Vmware, bootcamp, WINE, and a whole array of others. We can run exe’s, apps, and OS’s. Name something that a pc can do that a Mac can’t.

  37. Etrocal UNITED STATES Says:

Wait, go down deeper? That is Mac. It goes just as deep, but instead of digging, you can take the stairs.

  38. MadeOnAMac UNITED STATES Says:

I don’t know the full extent of what you mean by deep either. System Preferences gives general assistance onto commanding your machine. If you want to delve deeper, you use Terminal commands. But if there’s really something you want your computer to do, there’s almost always an app that can do it.

  39. Insomnimaniac UNITED STATES Says:

Maybe I’m oversimplifying things, but wouldn’t moving a folder be the same as ‘Cut’ and ‘Paste’? Open a Finder window and drag the folder from one directory to another. The folder is magically ‘Cut’ from it’s old location and ‘Paste’d to the new one.

  40. MacPhobia INDIA Says:

@above .. That would “Copy” and “Paste” the item rather than “Cut” and “Paste”

  41. TDH UNITED STATES Says:

I agree with MacPhobia. I used to use a Mac as my primary machine but found myself having to use either *NIX or Windows regularly. On top of that I found myself becoming more and more frustrated with not being able to do certain things with Macs in general until finally I gave up on them. Now since I find that brute power per dollar is more important, I’ll probably never go back unless Apple significantly drops their prices.

I do find it funny that Apple insist so hard that they are not a “Personal Computer” (I’m guessing they aren’t really a computer, but maybe they just aren’t personal, I know my last phone call to apple’s sales dept certainly didn’t seem so.)

  42. insomnimaniac UNITED STATES Says:

@MacP .. Actually, when I drag one folder into another, OS X removes the original copy and does not duplicate the item. (i.e not “Copy” and “Paste” but, yes, “Cut” and “Paste”).
